About

Christ and Cancer was founded by Eric and Denise Rager in May 2008. A cancer storm hit their family starting in June 2007, with a brain cancer diagnosis for their five year old son Matthew, followed by Eric’s mother Marsha dying from Leukemia in September 2007, and finally Eric being diagnosed with testicular cancer in May 2008. Through all the pain and stress God was there getting them through each day and blessing them throughout their journey. In what should have been the worst year of their lives, turned into a year of blessings. They felt God leading them to start a charity that would speak the truth about Christ and help others find the peace that had filled their lives in the midst of their storm. They were also influenced by other parents’ struggles with housing, while their child was in treatment for various cancers. A little girl from their church named Laiken was someone they also followed, her mother’s struggle with housing planted a seed that God used to urge them to go forward with Matthew’s Miracle House in Houston, Texas.

The Rager’s Story

Our five year old son Matthew was diagnosed with a brain tumor on June 27, 2007. Matthew had surgery July 3, 2007, all parts of the tumor were removed, the tumor measured 11cm by 7cm, Matthew had no neurological problems. Doctors were amazed to have such a large tumor and no visible symptoms of it. The top pathologists around the country were unable to determine what type of tumor Matthew had, they all agreed it was malignant, but very unique.

The Rager family began praying for guidance and a series of divine events lead them to Houston, Texas and MD Anderson Cancer Hospital. That summer Matthew started chemotherapy and Proton Radiation. During our 10 weeks in Houston we didn’t have to worry about housing. The Jimmy Burns Foundation relieved us of that burden, they provide housing for patients going through bone marrow transplants, they helped our family even though Matthew had a very different kind of cancer.

Our family and Christian community gathered around us in prayer and in physical support. The love of God was overwhelming, he provided everything we needed, including the strength to get through each day. Although we have always been Christian; cancer brought our family closer to God in ways we could never imagine. We were introduced to the world of pediatric cancers and all the struggles that go along with it.

After much prayer we felt God leading us to start an organization that would help families battling a cancer diagnosis both spiritually and physically. So Christ and Cancer was born — we bought a condo in Houston and decided it would become Matthew‘s Miracle House; a ministry within Christ and Cancer that provides short term housing during treatment. We always wondered who the first family to use the condo would be. Little did we know that we would be the first family to use the condo. In Spring of 2008 my husband Eric, was diagnosed with testicular cancer, we immediately left for Houston and we closed escrow on the condo the very day we drove into town. Matthew and Eric are survivors. We are rejoicing in our struggles and relying completely on God.
